Labour MPs Criticize Starmer's Reversal on Employee Protections as 'Utter Disloyalty'

Keir Starmer is facing backbench anger after ministers dropped proposals to provide employees immediate safeguards against wrongful termination, a change breaking the party's election pledges.

MPs Voice Concerns

MPs including a former minister who spearheaded the employment rights bill expressed apprehension over the climbdown announced by the government.

Cabinet members have removed the initiative to remove the 24-month "qualifying period" for workers to submit unfair firing complaints and enable them to proceed starting immediately in a new job, to facilitate passing the bill through lawmakers.

Government Impasse

The legislation became trapped in a standoff between the House of Lords and Commons over the original plan to give workers the protection from the start, as well as measures to ban "exploitative" zero-hours contracts.

The government now intends to implement the entitlement regarding wrongful termination following half a year employment instead, although additional first-day entitlements to parental leave and health-related payments are still due to go ahead, taking effect in the second quarter of 2026.

Opposition and Condemnation

The Labour MP for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East labeled the action as a "total abandonment" and committed to campaign for its overturning.

"We must oppose that compromise solution."

"This represents misguided policy and I intend to advocate to have this concession reversed."

A different party representative shared concern regarding insufficient discussion, observing: "There has been no discussion with parliamentary colleagues. Peers shouldn't override regarding election promises, hence what prompted our让步?"

Extended Ramifications

A third Labour MP commented: "Businesses should not worry from day-one rights, but workers have everything to fear from businesses who resists first-day entitlements."

The former employment minister affirmed that the decision "undoubtedly constitutes a pledge violation."

Government Justification

The schools minister stated existed a "genuine possibility" the implementation of the worker protection legislation might have faced postponement without the cabinet's decision regarding a U-turn over day one protections against unjust firing.

"Consultation has occurred concerning the matter about unfair dismissal and the duration requirement between businesses, the TUC and ministers, and following that discussion there's been agreement concerning future direction, that demonstrates progress."

The minister stressed that "This indicates the time limit will reduce from two years to six months, and this occurs simultaneously with crucial immediate protections regarding health-related payments and about family time off."

"Yet the threat existing without forward movement, those significant entitlements could remain inactive starting spring 2026."

Upon being asked regarding if it constituted an unfulfilled pledge, the secretary answered: "In the manifesto, the promise indicated was that we planned to cooperate with worker representatives, with companies, with community groups, through dialogue regarding such entitlements we planned to introduce."

"So, there are both parts concerning that issue, within the manifesto, the crucial protections and the discussion process."
