Much like bad weather tore through the north-west the previous evening, City blew United away at the Etihad. It was a statement three goal win for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their championship potential as they consolidated their standing at the top of the table.

Successive Setbacks for United

This result represented consecutive league defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them seven points off the table toppers with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

United’s ability to balance domestic and European soccer with a limited team has been a widely debated subject since they secured entry to the European competition. Looking at the schedule, it always seemed this was the matchday that would truly test this capability. Sadly for the away side, they seemed weary throughout, the landmark win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had tried to make changes with a a few changes. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all added energy, although the dropping of the on-form Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

City, in comparison, have no similar workload worries. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from last week’s win over the Toffees with Hemp making her first start since recovering from a physical setback.

Former Manchester City player Jess Park came closest, striking the post, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to produce a one shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have increased their advantage when a superb Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the winning team. After failing to beat any side who placed above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to place them in a strong situation after the opening fixtures.
