Area Law Enforcement
Roughly 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located many other smeared automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
City officials said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A senior official stated the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
